PAKi Logistics presents Life Cycle Analysis & CO2 footprint calculator: Sustainable savings through open pooling systems

27 November 2024

Ennepetal, 27.11.2024 – PAKi Logistics, the European market leader in open pool load carrier management, recently carried out a comprehensive Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) to compare the environmental impact of different pallet systems. The results of the study, conducted by the renowned RDC Environment, show that PAKi's open pooling system enables significant savings in CO₂ emissions, fossil resources and wood consumption. A CO₂ calculator has now been added to the PAKi website, which shows customers potential CO₂ savings using PAKi's open pallet pooling.

According to the LCA study, the use of PAKi's open pooling system leads to a reduction in CO₂ emissions of 8-24 percent per use compared to other pooling systems and 78 percent compared to single-use pallets. The main drivers of these savings are optimised logistical processes enabled by the open pooling model and the sustainable use and reuse of the pallets. A typical customer with 10,000 pallets could save 2,800 Kg of CO₂ emissions, which equals to 13,726 car kilometres, and 666 kilograms of fresh wood annually by switching from a 1-to-1 exchange system to the PAKi system.

External validation and sustainable circular economy

The study, which complies with international ISO 14044:2006 standards, was reviewed by an independent panel of experts and confirms the environmental benefits of PAKi Logistics' open pooling model. The analysis covers the entire life cycle of a pallet - from raw material extraction, production and utilisation through to end-of-life processing. The positive effects of recycling and energy generation from biomass were also considered. Based on this evaluation, PAKi Logistics also developed a simple solution for estimating possible emission savings for its customers and created the CO₂ Calculator

COCalculator – estimate possible emission savings in simple steps

With the online CO₂ Calculator created by PAKi, the logistics company offers its customers for the first time an order of magnitude of the possible reduction of CO2 footprint, based on the entire life cycle of load carriers in the pallet pool. By recording CO₂ emissions from production to reuse, the tool enables companies to ecologically evaluate and optimize their logistics processes and thus take targeted measures to reduce emissions. With the CO₂ Calculator, PAKi's customers can estimate possible emission savings when using pooling pallets themselves in order to pursue a validated optimization as part of their sustainability strategy in the next step. Leader in the industry

With over 250 employees in 28 countries and a network of thousands of exchange points across Europe, PAKi offers its customers a flexible and sustainable pallet management solution. By efficiently linking supply and demand, PAKi makes a significant contribution to avoiding unnecessary empty runs and thus further reducing its customers' carbon footprint. The results of the LCA study confirm PAKi's leading position as a sustainable pooling service provider. The CO₂ Calculator forms the basis for a comprehensive and sustainable estimation of possible emission savings when using pallets and provides all customers with a sound basis for decision-making in order to optimize their logistics processes.
